When someone considers all the different churches across the country, it can be easy to see a multitude of ways in which the American Church has lost her biblical foundations. In the following series, I address three doctrines that demonstrate some of these ways.
Across the United States, there are many churches who believe that all or some of the spiritual gifts ceased either when the last of the apostles died or when the Bible was put put together. This doctrine is called “cessationism.” A lack of belief in the spiritual gifts inhibits the Church from being who God created her to be and from accomplishing what God has called her to be because it rejects the tools God has given her.
Within the last 100 years or so, many have bought into the idea that church will fail in her mission to disciple the nations. This belief runs the gamut from simple ignorance of the Bible to actual heresy. Whether from ignorance or from a heretical doctrine, this belief always produces the same results: the Church has become impotent. If we are going to fail, what’s the point in trying?
Another lost doctrine is the biblical idea of sonship. As believers, we are sons and heirs. Inheritance comes through sonship. To obtain our inheritance, we must relate as sons (and daughters) to our Heavenly Father and to spiritual fathers here on earth.
